Yankees Start Strong Season, LeMahieu Begin Rehab Work, Cole Makes Progress in Elbow Injury Recovery

The New York Yankees have started the season on a strong note, with a record of 12-5. Infielder DJ LeMahieu is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment soon, likely playing fewer than five games before returning to the big league level. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed that LeMahieu will be going to Somerset for his rehab work, but it remains uncertain if he will require more than five games to recover from the bone bruise he sustained from a foul ball during spring training.

LeMahieu, who is 35 years old, has been out since just before Opening Day due to his injury. In his absence, Oswaldo Cabrera has been given more playing time at third base and has performed well with a .292/.346/.521 slash line, three home runs, and 12 RBI.

Boone also provided an update on ace pitcher Gerrit Cole, who has been making progress in his recovery from right elbow inflammation. Cole recently threw from 75 feet as part of his rehab and is aiming to be back on the mound by June 1. He was placed on the 60-day IL and is not eligible to return until at least May 27.
