The Rochester Institute of Technology recently unveiled its latest addition to campus – a 180,000-square-foot building that serves as a gateway for exploration and development. Unlike traditional structures showcasing robotics or engineering feats, this new building offers views into two transparent cubes. One cube is dedicated to theater rehearsals, while the other is used for dance studio practices.
Upon entering the $120 million building, visitors will immediately notice the unique layout. The theater is located next to glass-walled maker spaces, all overlooking a crescent-shaped atrium. Inside the maker spaces, a variety of benches and machine tools are connected to the ceiling by electrical cords and exhaust hoods. The workshop areas have garage-style doors that can be opened, allowing passersby to observe the innovative projects taking shape inside.
The Student Hall for Exploration and Development provides a creative and collaborative space for students to explore and develop their talents. With state-of-the-art facilities and a design that promotes transparency and interaction, this building is a hub for experimentation and innovation on campus. Whether it’s theater rehearsals or dance studio practices, students can showcase their skills in front of an audience while learning from others in real time. This new facility encourages collaboration and creativity among students, making it an invaluable addition to the RIT campus.
