During a press conference in Tokyo, Admiral John Aquilino, head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, expressed his concerns about the increase in China’s defense spending. He stated that while China’s economy was facing challenges, particularly due to issues in the real estate sector, it was investing significantly more in its military than the 7.2% increase that was reported last month.
Despite these economic challenges, Aquilino emphasized that there was a deliberate choice to prioritize funding for military capabilities. He highlighted his worries about this decision, especially considering the current economic situation in China. Aquilino also expressed his unease over China’s aggressive behavior and rhetoric in areas like the South and East China Seas, as well as concerning developments around disputed territories like the Second Thomas Shoal and Taiwan.
While Aquilino criticized China’s military actions and rhetoric, he also had strong words for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s regime. He condemned the regime for prioritizing military spending over addressing food shortages in the country, labeling the decision as “disgusting.” Aquilino pointed out that despite sanctions and economic challenges, the North Korean regime was allocating resources towards military capabilities instead of meeting the basic needs of its people.
In response to these concerns and criticisms, the Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately provide a comment. However, Aquilino’s statements shed light on the complexities of military spending and priorities in the region. They raised questions about whether there is a balance between defense needs and addressing pressing economic and humanitarian issues.
Aquilino’s comments come at a time when tensions between China and other countries in the region are high. The United States has stepped up its presence in Asia to counterbalance Chinese influence, while Japan has been assertive with its territorial claims. Meanwhile, North Korea continues to conduct nuclear tests despite international pressure.
Despite these tensions, however, Aquilino emphasized that diplomacy remains key to resolving conflicts in Asia. He called on all countries to work together towards peaceful solutions that address economic development and humanitarian needs while maintaining security.
“We need to find ways forward through dialogue,” he said during his press conference. “Diplomacy is key.”
