Apple’s AirPods have been the subject of many software updates that have added valuable features to them. With the upcoming release of iOS 18 at WWDC on June 10, it is expected that AirPods will receive even more health-related options. Currently, Apple offers heart health features through the Apple Watch, mobility features like walking steadiness-detection on the iPhone, and safety features such as fall detection and emergency SOS.
In the latest episode of One More Thing, there were discussions about rumors surrounding the future of AirPods. One such rumor was about a hearing aid mode launching with iOS 18. There are also speculations that AirPods may integrate more sensors in the future, including an EEG for detecting brain activity. Although Apple filed a patent in 2023 showing an EEG sensor embedded in earbuds, it remains uncertain if this feature will be implemented.
A few years ago, there were rumors about AirPods Pro getting a heart rate and body temperature sensor. However, this feature has not yet materialized. Other earbuds, like the recently released Sennheiser Momentum Sport, already offer similar features. Consolidating all this data within one’s workout app without having to wear both a watch and earbuds while exercising is genuinely helpful.
The potential for AirPods to further enhance Apple’s health ambitions is significant given their popularity and affordability as an entry point into Apple’s wearable line. Even if none of the patents mentioned become reality, it is commendable that Apple continues to explore ways to transform its wearables from entertainment devices to fully-fledged health tools.
