Mamikon Aslanyan, the leader of Vanadzor for five years, has been denied release from custody. The court rejected his petition today as reported by human rights defender Ruben Melikyan to Azatutyun. Aslanyan has been in prison since December 2021, facing accusations of expropriating lands in Vanadzor through fraudulent documents during his time in office. Two of his subordinates, a lawyer and the chief architect of the community, have also been charged but are currently free.
Despite being able to receive the most votes in the 2021 elections, Aslanyan was unable to return to his position as head of the community due to law enforcement officers initiating a criminal case against him immediately after the Vanadzor Council of Elders elections. Aslanyan claims that the case against him is politically motivated and stated this to “Azatutyun.”
