CY Middle School students, along with Kelly Walsh High School students, represented Wyoming in the National Science Bowl Championship held in Washington. This marked the fifth consecutive year that Kelly Walsh High School won first place as the Wyoming Regional High School Science Bowl champion in 2024. The KW Science Club holds mock science bowls to prepare for competitions throughout the year. Natrona County school district mentioned that part of the fun is learning how to quickly respond to questions and using strategic critical thinking skills to avoid making mistakes on the spot.
In addition to this, CY Middle School students are a part of their school’s STEM Club, which explores advanced scientific knowledge and competes in Science Olympiad competitions each year. From January to March, 115 regional high school and middle school teams competed for a chance to attend the National Finals. The top 67 high schools and top 48 middle school teams from across the nation gathered to compete in academic competitions, culminating in the announcement of the new National Champions. Unfortunately, Casper’s teams were eliminated before reaching the finals.
Dr. Harriet Kung, Acting Director of Energy Office of Science expressed excitement at the start of the 34th National Science Bowl Finals. She noted that this event brings together some of the brightest young minds in America and showcases their future in science and innovation. The top two middle and high school teams will earn $5,000 for their schools’ math and science departments while other schools placing in the top 16 will receive $1,000 for their departments.
