If US remains steadfast in decision on TikTok law, China will respond

On Monday, China expressed its disapproval of the US President Joe Biden’s decision to strengthen Taiwan’s defense and sell TikTok to a US company. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian urged the US not to implement the “negative” aspects of the law that involve China. He warned that if the US sticks to its decision, China will take decisive steps to protect its security and development interests.

The following Wednesday, Biden signed a legal package primarily intended for military aid to Ukraine and Israel. Additionally, he signed a separate bill that could result in TikTok being banned in the US if its Chinese owner, ByteDance, does not sell it within a year. The Taiwanese government welcomed the new American law, stating that it would help maintain security in the region.

These recent developments highlight the escalating tensions between the US and China, particularly concerning issues relating to Taiwan and technology ownership. China’s response to the US actions remains a point of contention, with potential consequences for both countries’ interests. The geopolitical implications of these moves could further complicate an already strained relationship between the two global powers, leading to heightened uncertainty and geopolitical instability.

In Beijing, Lin Jian spoke out against the US move to strengthen Taiwan’s defense. “We strongly condemn this move,” he said. “It is unacceptable for any country to take actions that undermine peace and stability in this region.” He also warned that if Biden sticks to his decision, China will take decisive steps to protect its security and development interests.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., Biden signed a legal package primarily intended for military aid to Ukraine and Israel. In addition, he signed a separate bill that could result in TikTok being banned in the U.S if its Chinese owner does not sell it within a year.

The Taiwanese government welcomed this new American law as it would help maintain security in the region.

These recent developments have highlighted rising tensions between China and the United States over issues related to Taiwan’s defense and technology ownership rights.

China has long been critical of foreign interference in its internal affairs regarding Taiwan’s status as part of China’s territory.

The U.S has been providing military aid and support for Taiwan for decades through various agreements such as Military Aid Treaty Program (MATP) which provides financial assistance for purchasing weapons from U.S-based suppliers.

The latest move by Biden has sparked outrage from Beijing who accused him of interfering with their sovereignty over Taiwan.

In response, Beijing has called on Washington D.C., not to implement any measures that undermine peace and stability in East Asia.
