The Colorado Rockies faced a daunting challenge during their recent game, as they needed to prevent five runs from being scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to avoid being written into MLB history. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to do so and now hold an unwanted record. The Rockies have been trailing in at least part of all 29 games played this season, breaking a tie with the 1910 St. Louis Browns for the longest such streak in history.
With a current record of 7-22, the Rockies have struggled to maintain a lead throughout games. Their last game where they were either tied or ahead for the entire game was back in September 2023 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Starting pitcher Elehuris Montero had a solid outing, pitching eight innings of shutout baseball but it was not enough to stop them from falling behind in the ninth inning.
The Rockies’ promising first-inning rally that scored five runs ultimately fell apart as relief pitcher Justin Lawrence struggled, allowing a barrage of hits and runs that pushed the game into extra innings. In the end, it was a double and single in the tenth inning that sealed their fate and resulted in another loss.
Although technically they never trailed during the game, this loss still counts against them and is yet another disappointment for fans after a poor season in 2023 and an unimpressive offseason. Despite low expectations, the team has been struggling even more than anticipated due to their rough start to the season.
