Hawaii’s Iconic ‘Stairway to Heaven’ Must be Demolished due to Inaccessibility and Tourist Overload

Despite being closed for decades, the Stairway to Heaven in Hawaii has remained a popular attraction among daredevils from around the world. Constructed by US Marines during World War II to provide easier access to a communications station in the Ko’olau Mountains, the wooden stairs were later replaced with steel ones. However, due to its dangerous nature and violation of safety regulations, the Haiku Stairs were closed in 1987 and have remained so ever since.

Despite this closure, many tourists still attempt to sneak in before dawn to avoid the guard stationed at the entrance. They risk a $1,000 fine and disregard prohibition signs. Numerous hikers have shared images of their climb on social media, despite there being accidents and fatalities like in 2012.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi has confirmed that the dismantling of the stairs will begin this month after it was unanimously approved. The closure serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting rules and regulations even when pursuing thrilling experiences.
