Discovering the Joy of Science in Carolina Bay’s ‘In the Lab with Lil’

In the community of Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall, residents are excited for a new science program called “In the Lab with Lil” introduced by life enrichment assistant Lily Poulos. Poulos, who studied exercise science and public health at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, recognized the need for more science-related programming in the community and created this engaging laboratory class to cater to interested residents.

The program attracts around 12 to 20 residents with backgrounds in science and engineering. Poulos believes that the program not only allows them to revisit their studies but also connects them with others who share similar interests. She sources experiment ideas from websites like sciencebuddies.com to create engaging and educational activities that keep participants entertained while learning.

Some memorable experiments from “In the Lab with Lil” include an exploding snowman and inflating a balloon without air by using varying amounts of vinegar and baking soda. Residents have fun conducting these experiments while learning and bonding with their neighbors who share a passion for science.

Poulos emphasizes safety during the experiments by encouraging participants to wear goggles. The success of the program is evident in the positive feedback and increased participation from residents who appreciate having a science-focused program alongside arts-related activities already available at Carolina Bay.

Residents are thrilled about this new addition to their community’s offerings, which provides an opportunity to learn something new while connecting with like-minded individuals. With Poulos’ creativity and dedication, “In the Lab with Lil” has become a beloved program among its attendees, giving them something exciting to look forward to every month.
