Plaquemine Family Dollar Store to Close along with 600 others

In Louisiana, a nationwide discount retail chain is facing financial difficulties that have led to the closure of several stores including the Family Dollar location in Plaquemine. Dollar Tree, Inc., the parent company of Family Dollar, has announced plans to shut down 970 stores in total, with 600 set to close in the first half of the year and an additional 370 as leases expire. The decision was made after weak fourth-quarter earnings were reported for the Chesapeake, Va.-based retailer, founded in 1959 in Charlotte, N.C.

Despite these challenges, company executives remain optimistic about future growth opportunities. In fact, Family Dollar currently has 319 stores in Louisiana alone and is widely present across the state. With over 16,000 stores and 200,000 employees across North America, Dollar Tree is a Fortune 500 company that has undergone significant expansion in recent years. However, a major setback occurred in 2020 when Family Dollar was fined $42 million by the Department of Justice for storing consumer products in a rodent-infested warehouse in West Memphis, Ark. This penalty marked the largest-ever food safety case and resulted in product recalls and public scrutiny.

The closures of Family Dollar stores come at a time when its chief rival, Dollar General, is experiencing continuous growth and expansion. Additionally, sales declined during the holiday season and there were costs associated with cleaning up the rodent-infested warehouse in Arkansas that added to their troublesome situation. Despite these challenges, executives at Dollar Tree remain committed to their transformation journey and see opportunities for future success.
