Europe’s Role in its Own Security: Moving Beyond Reliance on America with Trump as President

Europeans must take responsibility for their own security and not rely on America to do it for them, especially with Trump in office. Ukraine’s vulnerability has been due to the lack of significant military aid from Western European countries, especially financially strong ones like France, Germany, and Great Britain. This hesitancy to provide support has left Ukraine alone against Russia.

Whether Biden or Trump wins the US presidential election, America’s focus will likely be on challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and the Middle East. There is a growing sense in Washington that Europe should be able to handle its own security against Russia. However, the lack of united action and leadership from European countries is causing concern in the US.

For Europe to maintain American support and strengthen its relationship with the US, there needs to be a shift in attitude towards taking on a greater burden of defense. Committing to increased defense spending, setting up a fund for military aid to Ukraine, and presenting concrete plans for NATO at the upcoming summit could demonstrate to the USA that Europe is serious about its security.

Overall, Western European countries must step up and show leadership in defense matters if they want to secure their future and maintain their relationship with America. By taking proactive measures and fulfilling their commitments to NATO and Ukraine, Europe can strengthen its position as a reliable partner in global affairs.
