The Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA) is hosting the 2024 Biennial Paperweight Convention in New England. This year’s convention, happening from May 15-18 at the Crowne Plaza, will offer three free opportunities for the public to explore the art, history, and legacy of glassmaking through demonstrations, a paperweight fair, and a documentary screening.
Eric Jump, vice president of the PCA board, emphasizes that paperweights are often underappreciated as a display of glass art mastery by skillful artists. The PCA, with roots on the East Coast, is excited to return to New England for this year’s convention.
The commemorative paperweights for this year are inspired by the state of Rhode Island. Artists William Manson Jr. and Clinton Smith have created limited edition paperweights featuring aspects of Rhode Island, such as a flamework bouquet of violet blossoms and the Rhode Island Greening apple with blossoms, buds, and leaves. These paperweights are available for purchase to support the artists and the PCA.
On Friday, May 17, there will be glassmaking demonstrations at Blackstone River Glass for the public to enjoy. Saturday, May 18 will feature a free screening of the documentary film “Paul J. Stankard: Flower & Flame” which delves into Stankard’s life and legacy. Additionally, there will be a free Paperweight Fair where attendees can meet the artists and explore thousands of paperweights.
