A KSAT crew recently followed San Antonio Metropolitan Health District inspectors to see how they are ensuring food safety during the festivities.
According to Deborah Liu, a Metro Health environmental health officer, consuming unsafe food can have serious consequences. Sometimes, food may not be cooked to the right temperature, leading to foodborne illnesses that may not manifest until the next day. This is why it is crucial for inspectors to constantly monitor vendors at every Fiesta event.
Inspectors check various aspects of food safety, including ensuring that food is at the correct temperature, that vendors are following proper sanitation practices, and that they have appropriate protective gear like gloves, hats, or hairnets. If a vendor is found to be in violation of food safety regulations, they are given the opportunity to correct the issue. However, failure to do so could result in losing their permit to operate and getting shut down.
If anyone attending Fiesta notices something concerning regarding food safety, they are encouraged to call 311 and report it immediately. By being vigilant and prioritizing food safety, everyone can enjoy Fiesta festivities without the risk of getting sick.
