Dexter Fowler, a former Major League Baseball player, recently graduated from Penn State after completing his bachelor’s degree in organizational and professional communication. Fowler, who won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs during his 14-year baseball career, fulfilled a promise to his parents to return to school. His first professional contract included a clause that paid for his college education, and at the age of 38, he successfully completed his degree through Penn State’s World Campus.
During Penn State’s commencement ceremonies at the Bryce Jordan Center, Fowler served as a student marshal, reflecting on his journey and the importance of education in his life. He explained that he chose to pursue his degree online to align with his new career pursuits in sports broadcasting and content creation for athletes and entertainers. Fowler mentioned that his dedication to returning to school was a way of honoring his parents’ wishes and fulfilling his promise to them.
Throughout his baseball career, Fowler played for five different teams, including the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Los Angeles Angels. In 2016, he made history by hitting a lead-off home run in Game 7 of the World Series, helping the Cubs secure their first title in over a century. After retiring from baseball in 2023, Fowler remained committed to continuing his education and pursuing new opportunities in the sports and entertainment industry.
