John Montgomery, a veteran assistant coach with over nine years of experience at the University of Hawaii, has joined Chris Acker’s coaching staff at Long Beach State. According to sources close to the situation, Montgomery will be responsible for overseeing the team’s defense and post players. Montgomery was contacted by Spectrum News but declined to comment on his new role.
Acker, who was named head coach of LBSU in early April, has been assembling his coaching staff and has now added Montgomery to his team. The two had previously worked together as assistants under Ganot for two seasons in Manoa before reuniting at Long Beach State. Montgomery was eventually promoted to associate head coach in 2021.
With Montgomery joining him at Long Beach State, Acker and Montgomery will now face off against each other at least twice a season, with one game taking place at the Stan Sheriff Center. Brian McInnis, who covers the state’s sports scene for Spectrum News Hawaii, can be reached at brian.mcinnis@charter.com for any inquiries.
