From Book Enthusiasts to Business Owners: The Story of Sciuto’s Bookshop

After a year of business, Sciuto’s Bookshop in Douglas is set to close.

Andrea and Zack Sciuto have always shared a love for books, which is why they fulfilled their dream of opening Sciuto’s Bookshop in Douglas last year. The couple sold donated books out of a small space off Main Street, offering rare titles as well as more familiar ones at 50% off their original price. Initially, the store saw a lot of business, but over time it began to decline due to inadequate foot traffic.

The bookshop was a family adventure for the couple, who had been planning it since their time at Syracuse University. Although they will remain in the shop for the rest of April, their plans for May are still undecided. Andrea mentioned that they will have promotions for the remaining time the shop is open and may donate any remaining books to local libraries.

Andrea managed the shop while Zack supported them through his tree-cutting business. While she loved having a bookstore, she understands that it was not sustainable enough to keep it open permanently. She prefers to focus on the happiness it brought them while they had it and remains optimistic about what the future holds for them.
