The family gathered in Pragsdorf, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to commemorate Joel’s seventh birthday. Despite the tragic circumstances that led to his death at the hands of Geri K, who was sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison for the murder, the K family wanted to set aside their pain and sorrow to honor their son on his special day.
The celebration took place at a meadow near the football field where Joel had spent his final moments. The family decorated the space with photos, candles, stuffed animals, and garlands to create a festive atmosphere in remembrance of Joel. His parents expressed that being in this location brought them closer to their beloved son.
Joel’s four siblings, Uncle Felix, Aunt Tini, Grandma and Grandpa were present along with friends and acquaintances who gathered to remember the young boy. Despite the somber circumstances, the family wanted to make the event joyful by serving strawberry shortcake and a Minion-themed cake which was Joel’s favorite.
Reflecting on Joel’s birth, Kathleen recalled fond memories of his early days and the joy he brought to their lives. Although Joel could no longer be physically present to celebrate with them, his family believed that he was watching over them from above. The birthday celebration served as a way to honor and cherish Joel’s memory keeping his spirit alive in their hearts.
