Ex-German soldier confesses in court to spying for Russia

In Düsseldorf, Germany, a former German soldier on trial for spying for Russia admitted to passing information to the Russian consulate in Bonn but claimed his intentions were aimed at preventing further escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Thomas, 54 years old and identified only to protect his privacy under German laws, worked in the IT and logistics service of the German army.

Thomas confessed to transferring computer files and weapons manuals to a Russian intelligence service, but he stated that he did so to avoid worsening the situation in Ukraine. The trial is just one of several cases involving alleged spies discovered in Germany since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

According to prosecutors, Thomas approached both the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Moscow embassy in Berlin in May 2023, offering collaboration. He was arrested in August 2023 in Koblenz, a central German city. The court hearings are expected to continue until June, with Thomas facing potential penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

This trial highlights the growing tensions between Germany and Russia following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It also raises questions about how far German authorities are willing to go to protect their national security interests and prevent further espionage activities by foreign powers.
