The European Commission for Economic Affairs spokesperson, Veerle Nuyts, has sparked controversy in Italy by stating that the Pnrr decree contains measures related to the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan. However, other aspects not covered and unrelated to the Pnrr have been criticized by various Italian politicians.
Secretary of +Europa, Riccardo Magi, has criticized the government’s use of PNRR funds to introduce pro-life associations into clinics, stating that it is a political move that offends women, freedoms, dignity, and is an improper use of funds. Similarly, parliamentarians from the 5 Star Movement of the Social Affairs commissions of the Chamber and Senate have also criticized the government for including the rule to allow pro-life associations into counseling centers in the Pnrr decree.
They believe that instead of using European funds for ideological propaganda and restricting women’s rights, the government could have focused on resolving issues affecting Italian consultants by adopting their bill presented to the Chamber. This bill proposes providing resources and qualified personnel to ensure compliance with the law on abortion. They argue that prioritizing retrograde propaganda over women’s rights is shameful. In conclusion, these politicians highlighted that there are better ways for the government to use European funds than to promote anti-abortion sentiments at the expense of women’s rights.
