Jeff Lichtman, a Biology professor, has been named as the next Dean of Sciences at Harvard FAS | News

Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) has announced the appointment of Biology professor Jeff W. Lichtman as the new dean of Science, effective July 1st. Lichtman will succeed current Sciences Dean Christopher W. Stubbs, who is expected to step down at the end of the academic year. Despite this, Stubbs will remain involved in FAS administration and continue to serve as Hoekstra’s special adviser on artificial intelligence.

Hoekstra had a busy few weeks leading up to Lichtman’s appointment as she also recently announced the next Arts and Humanities dean. As a leading figure in Harvard’s Molecular and Cell Biology department, Lichtman serves on various committees, including the curriculum committee and the Mind, Brain, and Behavior program committee. He has been instrumental in advancing neuroscience pedagogy at Harvard through his involvement in the MBB program, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration.

Lichtman’s research primarily focuses on mapping the brain’s pathways, known as a “connectome.” He has developed innovative methods for visualizing neural connections in the brain. Hoekstra praised Lichtman for his visionary approach to both research and education, noting his ability to bring people together to advance knowledge.

Due to his new administrative responsibilities, Lichtman will no longer be teaching Neuro 80 in the fall. The current plan is for a different instructor to teach the course moving forward. This appointment reflects Hoekstra’s commitment to fostering collaboration and excellence within FAS faculty members.

As an experienced educator with a strong background in neuroscience research, Lichtman is well-equipped to lead FAS science faculty towards greater achievements. His passion for interdisciplinary collaboration is likely to inspire many faculty members across departments and schools within FAS.

Lichtman’s appointment marks another milestone in FAS’ ongoing efforts towards fostering excellence within its science faculty while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among its members. It is clear that he brings valuable experience and expertise that will help shape FAS’ future direction.

With this appointment, Hopi E. Hoekstra continues her commitment towards fostering excellence within FAS faculties by providing them with leadership opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential while contributing positively towards achieving FAS’ overall mission of advancing knowledge through research and education.
