The USA Hockey national team is set to compete in the upcoming World Championship, with Michigan State University’s men’s hockey goalie Trey Augustine being added to the roster on Sunday. In place of Detroit forward Dylan Larkin, who was injured, Augustine will represent MSU on the international stage.
Augustine, a 19-year-old freshman at MSU, has been a standout player for the Spartans this season. He has started in all 35 games so far and has posted impressive stats, including three shutouts, a .915 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average. These accomplishments earned him Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors. Additionally, Augustine won Most Outstanding Player in the Big Ten Tournament and was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates.
A South Lyon native, Augustine is a product of the USA Hockey Development Program and was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Joining him on the Red Wings roster are Detroit goalie Alex Lyon and defenseman Jeff Petry, while Wings head coach Derek Lalonde and goaltending coach Alex Westlund are part of the coaching staff. Prior to playing at MSU, Augustine spent two full seasons for Team USA, backstopping the national team to a gold medal in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Tournament. This past season for MSU, he quickly became a fan favorite during the Spartans’ best season in over a decade. He had many standout performances, including a 34-save shutout at Ohio State in November, saving 60 out of 64 shots in a win over No. 1 Wisconsin and even tallying an assist in the NCAA Tournament against Western Michigan.
This recognition is significant for Augustine as he transitions from competing for a Division One national title to representing his country on an international stage from May 10th to May 26th in Ostrava and Prague Czechia during the World Championship tournament
