Germany aims to tighten cannabis laws to regulate smoking weed with restrictions

The German government is currently considering tightening its Cannabis Act in a bid to prevent commercial structures from being created during cultivation. The coalition aims to ensure that multiple cultivation associations do not operate in the same place or building, thereby avoiding the emergence of additional business models around cannabis cultivation. A draft law has been proposed, which gives authorities more power to enforce regulations and prohibit cultivation areas that may conflict with EU law.

Since April 1st, Germany has allowed possession and controlled cultivation of cannabis for private use, but with restrictions. Public consumption is permitted to a limited extent, with a ban in the immediate presence of minors and near schools, daycare centers, and sports facilities. Despite this general release, the German railway system still prohibits smoking weed at train stations and platforms. This ban is set to take effect in four weeks, with violations being pursued starting June 1st.

The prohibition does not affect the consumption of cannabis for medical reasons, which was already permitted before its release. However, the adjustment to the railway’s house rules is expected to be completed within four weeks, with violations being pursued starting June 1st. This move is intended to protect travelers at train stations, especially children and young people, by aligning it with the legal ban on cannabis consumption in specific areas.
