On Tuesday, the United States Senate passed a comprehensive bill that includes a US$95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Additionally, the legislation may potentially ban TikTok in the US if it fails to separate from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. The bill was approved by 79 votes in favor and 18 against, and now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature.
President Biden has indicated that he will sign the bill as soon as it arrives on his desk and plans to begin sending new weapons to Ukraine this week. The military aid package includes US$61 billion for Ukraine, US$26 billion for Israel, and US$8 billion for Taiwan. These funds are intended to help these countries defend themselves against various threats and conflicts in their respective regions.
The TikTok provision stipulates that the app must separate from its Chinese parent company within nine months. Failure to do so could result in a ban on TikTok in the US. The app has stated its intention to challenge this law in court once it is signed by President Biden.
