New Venezuelan Presidential Candidate Urrutia: A Diplomat’s Call for Unity and Transition

Edmundo González Urrutia, a 74-year-old diplomat who has been chosen as the opposition representative in Venezuela’s upcoming presidential elections, made his first public statement on Wednesday. In a video published on YouTube, Urrutia emphasized the need to address the challenges facing Venezuela, including poverty, inflation, and currency devaluation.

He pledged to work towards a transition that would guarantee freedom for political prisoners and the return of exiles. Drawing on his experience in diplomacy, Urrutia acknowledged Venezuela’s role in a world filled with conflict and emphasized the importance of unity within the opposition. He expressed gratitude for the support of key figures like María Corina Machado and Manuel Rosales who played a role in making his candidacy possible.

Urrutia also acknowledged that he faces obstacles such as disqualifications and bans from the Maduro regime but remains committed to his vision for a democratic and prosperous Venezuela.
