The AI Connect II Regional Conference brought together policymakers and technology experts from 15 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region to discuss the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and share experiences and suitable solutions for the region. The event, organized by the US Department of State, the Atlantic Council, and the Department of Science and Technology, took place from April 22 to 24 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy emphasized the importance of international cooperation for the sustainable development of AI technology in the Asia-Pacific region. He highlighted the potential benefits of AI for economic and social development while acknowledging concerns related to its socio-economic and ethical implications. Vietnam has developed a National Strategy and Policy to leverage the benefits of AI responsibly, invest in AI research and development, and incorporate AI into specific industries like transportation and healthcare.
The Deputy Consul General of the US in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Anne Benjaminson, stressed the significance of responsible AI development according to OECD principles. She recognized the transformative potential of AI in society and the economy while also highlighting the need for ethical considerations and governmental oversight to ensure human safety and privacy. Currently, there are no international principles governing AI development, but countries use OECD principles as a reference when formulating their policies.
