Over 400,000 Jobs Created in March, Unemployment Rate at Lowest in History: How the Secondary Sector is Boosting Employment Rates in the Country

The unemployment rate has dropped to a new low in the country, thanks to the boost of the secondary sector and the creation of over 400,000 jobs in March. This decrease is significant as it marks a historic record for Inegi. According to ENOE, the employed population was 59 million 818 thousand 274 in March, an increase of 414 thousand jobs compared to February and 799,994 more than in March 2023.

Out of this total employed population, 41.6 million were subordinate and paid workers, representing a one million increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, there were 13 million independent workers, 3.1 million employers, and 2.1 million who worked in businesses or family plots. These figures indicate that various sectors have contributed to the growth of employment rates and have helped boost the economy’s overall health.

According to ENOE statistics, there were also significant contributions from different sectors such as services (26.5 million), commerce (11.4 million), manufacturing (10.3 million), agriculture (6.2 million), construction (4.6 million), and other economic activities (424 thousand). Additionally, there were those who did not specify their activity (352 thousand).

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography announced that with the boost of the secondary sector and the creation of over 400 thousand jobs in March, unemployment dropped below two percent for only one time on record.

The latest report by ENOE shows that there are currently over five millions people working nationwide with an increase of around half a million jobs from February alone.

Accordingly, out of these employees – nearly forty two percent were subordinate workers while sixteen percent worked independently; three percent worked as employers; ten percent as part-time or temporary employees; seven percent worked on farms or ran family-owned businesses; six percent worked in construction; five percent worked in other economic activities such as finance or IT; four percent did not specify their occupation.

Among these groups: twenty six point five millions were employed within service industries such as healthcare or education; eleven point four millions were involved in commerce such as retail or hospitality; ten point three millions worked within manufacturing industries such as automotive or electronics; six point two millions worked within agriculture including farming or livestock raising; four point six millions worked within construction industry including building trades or civil engineering
