Putin’s Crackdown on Immigrants in Russia: A Tale of Fear, Resentment and National Unity.

After the terrorist attack at a Moscow concert hall on March 22, the Russian government under Vladimir Putin has intensified its repression against immigrants in the country. The escalation of hostility towards foreigners is believed to be due to the fact that four individuals accused of the attack were identified as citizens of Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia. These individuals were reportedly in Russia on temporary work visas, some of which had expired.

Following the attack, which was claimed by an Islamic State front and caught Russian intelligence off guard, Putin launched a crackdown on immigrants. As a result, nearly 500 people were ordered to leave the country since the Moscow terrorist attack. Many immigrants in Russia hail from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, and their governments advised against participating in demonstrations or crowded events due to the risk of persecution or violence.

Despite their essential roles in the job market, especially during times of war, Putin aims to maintain national unity and a moderate image. However, his persecution of foreigners has become increasingly apparent and has fueled tensions within the country. The Russian regime’s claims of increased crimes by immigrants contradict official data showing a decline in such incidents.

Human Rights Watch reports that even before the attack, foreigners in Russia faced constant persecution through racial profiling, identity checks, and prolonged detentions. This treatment unfairly targeted non-Slavic migrants and ethnic minorities. The ongoing crackdown on immigrants threatens to further strain the delicate balance within Russian society.

The escalation in hostility towards foreigners can be attributed to several factors beyond just immigration policy. Firstly, there is fear among Russians about terrorism and security threats from outside their borders. Secondly, there is resentment towards those who are perceived as taking jobs away from Russian citizens during times of economic hardship.

Furthermore, Putin’s authoritarian regime sees any form of dissent as a threat to its power structure. Immigrants are seen as potential troublemakers who could disrupt social stability and upset national unity.
