Race to Well-Being: Analyzing Italy’s Corporate Adaptation Efforts Amid the Pandemic

Job opportunities are booming in the Northern regions.

The North, particularly Lombardy, has set the standard for work quality and corporate well-being in Italy. The Autonomous Province of Bolzano and Veneto followed closely behind, while the Autonomous Province of Trento, Piedmont, and Valle d’Aosta just missed out on the podium. Unfortunately, Southern Italy lagged behind with the exception of Sardinia. Meanwhile, Sicily, Calabria, and Basilicata occupied the last three spots in the national ranking.

The CGIA Research Office conducted an analysis based on Istat’s BES (Sustainable Fair Wellbeing) report to evaluate how companies have adapted to changes in the job market following the pandemic. The findings showed that companies across the country have been focusing on retaining their employees rather than finding new ones due to a shortage of skilled profiles. They are doing so by offering higher salaries, converting fixed-term contracts to permanent ones, providing flexible working hours, using innovative professional tools, promoting career advancement opportunities and providing corporate benefits.

Despite this effort towards improving corporate well-being in SMEs in the North for several years, there has been a trend of employees leaving permanent jobs. With a rapidly increasing supply of labor but low demand for it, there is a high risk of losing top talent to competitors. According to INPS data on voluntary resignations among private permanent employees under 60 years old has increased significantly in recent years. Many are leaving their current jobs for better salary offers and less stressful working environments elsewhere.

To retain their valuable employees and stay competitive in the job market, companies must be attentive to these trends and work towards creating a positive work environment that meets employee needs such as salary offers and flexible working arrangements while also providing opportunities for career advancement and personal growth.
