Russia has been accused by the USA of using chemical weapons in its war against Ukraine, as announced in a statement from the State Department. The announcement came with new sanctions being imposed on Russia, including more than 200 individuals and 80 companies and individuals for their alleged violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The State Department has concluded that Russia used chloropicrin against Ukrainian military forces, a substance included in the black list of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Chloropicrin is an irritant and suffocating agent in high concentrations but is not a neuroparalytic poison. It was previously used during World War I.
Moscow has yet to respond to this accusation. Earlier, the Ukrainian military had reported Russian troops using chemical substances on the battlefield, though no casualties were reported. This allegation continues to be a contentious issue in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
