400 non-Russian citizens lose their citizenship due to criminal activities in Russia

Russian authorities have revoked the citizenship of 398 former foreigners who had previously received Russian citizenship, according to TASS, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs. These individuals were found to have committed crimes within the first six months of obtaining their citizenship.

A new law known as the “Citizenship” law took effect in Russia on October 26, 2023. The law allows for the deprivation of Russian citizenship from foreigners who engage in activities such as discrediting the Russian army, spreading fake information, sabotage, defection, anti-Russian activities, espionage, treason, violating laws related to foreign agents and hooliganism.

The first case of citizenship deprivation occurred just two months after the law was enacted in December 2023. Two individuals were arrested with packages containing drugs and judgments were made in their cases but no sentences were announced. Subsequently they were stripped of their Russian citizenship.

The new law allows for stricter measures to be taken against individuals who misuse their Russian citizenship or engage in criminal activities. This serves as a warning to all individuals who hold Russian citizenship to abide by the laws of the country to avoid facing similar consequences.

According to sources close to the ministry of internal affairs, there has been a significant increase in cases where foreigners have engaged in criminal activities while holding Russian citizenship since the implementation of this new law.

It is important for foreigners who are considering applying for Russian citizenship to understand and respect the laws and regulations that come with it. They should also be aware that any criminal activity will result in severe consequences including loss of Russian citizenship.

Overall, this new law serves as a reminder that holding Russian citizenship comes with great responsibility and those who do not abide by its rules will face severe consequences.
