SCICON, or the Outdoor School of Science and Conservation, is a unique educational experience located in Tulare County, CA. Operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, the school provides an immersive learning environment for fifth and sixth graders to discover the importance of science and conservation. With its 1,170-acre campus, over 8,000 students visit annually to explore nature and develop a deep appreciation for the Earth.
At SCICON, Director Dianne Shew describes the school as a magical place where students can connect with nature and gain a greater understanding of their impact on the environment. The curriculum includes hands-on activities such as hiking, studying aquatic life, and exploring a museum featuring local wildlife and plants. The school’s mission is to instill in students a sense of responsibility towards protecting the environment for future generations.
In early 2023, SCICON was severely damaged by historic flooding that damaged the habitat of native salamanders. To support efforts in restoring this habitat, Friends of SCICON received a grant from Disney Conservation Fund. Additionally, Disney “VoluntEARS” joined in with community efforts to clear debris and revitalize the area. These efforts not only aim to restore salamander habitat but also provide education on environmental conservation for students who visit SCICON.
Shew believes that inspiring each child who visits SCICON to take action and spread awareness about conservation is key to making positive strides towards protecting our planet. With Disney’s support and community involvement, SCICON continues its mission to empower students with the knowledge and skills they need to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
