BurnBot technology is being introduced in the Tahoe-Truckee region by a group of fire and community resource agencies. The initiative aims to enhance wildfire prevention efforts and protect the community and environment from the detrimental effects of losing forest health.
The CEO of Tahoe Fund, Amy Berry, emphasized that forest health should be the top priority. She stated that if the forest is lost, it would have a devastating effect on the entire community. To address this issue, a collaboration between the Tahoe Fund, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, and the Martis Fund was formed.
The BurnBot machine is an innovative technology that allows for the reduction of hazardous forest fuels using a remote control in steep slopes and dense vegetation areas. It consumes 10 to 12 gallons of fuel daily and can efficiently remove dead vegetation before a destructive fire threatens sensitive habitats. This proactive approach helps fortify communities and critical infrastructure while protecting sensitive habitats.
Ryan Gibson, Regional Manager of Northern California BurnBot explained that treating areas with BurnBot technology improves fire crews’ ability to suppress fires quickly by reducing their impact on communities and the environment significantly. Chief Ryan Sommers of North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District added that implementing this technology will allow for more effective wildfire prevention efforts in the region.
