Appalachian State University announced the passing of football player Jack Murphy on April 26. The offensive lineman was a beloved member of the Mountaineers and had been playing for the team since joining from Marshall in 2023.
The university released a statement expressing their condolences to Jack’s loved ones and the App State community. The cause of death was not disclosed, but foul play is not suspected. Coach Shawn Clark also shared his grief on social media, asking for thoughts and prayers for Jack’s family and the App State community.
Jack Murphy was a redshirt junior who played as an offensive tackle for the Mountaineers, starting all 14 games during the season that saw Appalachian State finish second in the Sun Belt and win the Cure Bowl against Miami (Ohio). He received All-Sun Belt third team honors for his outstanding performance during the season. Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Jack had spent three seasons at Marshall before becoming a member of the Mountaineers.
