Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a two-time European champion who represented Ukraine in the Rio Olympics, tragically lost his life while defending the country from Russian aggression. The Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation announced his death on Monday, just days after he enlisted in the armed forces at the start of the conflict.
Pielieshenko had won fourth place in the 85 kg category in Rio in 2016 and was highly regarded as one of Ukraine’s top weightlifters. However, his career came to an abrupt end in 2018 when he tested positive for a masking agent.
In a statement, the Federation expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Pielieshenko, noting that he had given his life to defend his country. Ukrainian weightlifting team coach Victor Slobodianiuk also paid tribute to Pielieshenko on Facebook, calling him a hero who will always be remembered for his bravery and dedication to both sport and country.
