US and Mexico retract joint bid for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosting duties

The US Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Federation have announced the withdrawal of their joint bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Instead, they will focus on a bid for the 2031 edition of the tournament, with a goal of equal investment as the Men’s tournament to maximize the commercial potential of the women’s tournament.

The decision to shift their bid comes after an extensive calendar of international soccer competitions in Mexico, including hosting the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2018 and co-hosting it with Egypt in 2026 (co-hosted by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman). In addition, Mexico has also hosted several other international events such as the UEFA Nations League Final Group A matches in 2019 and 2021.

With the US and Mexico withdrawing their bid, there are now two remaining bids to host the 2027 tournament – one from Brazilian Football Confederation and a joint bid from Royal Belgian Football Association, Royal Netherlands Football Association, and German Football Association. The announcement of the winning bid will take place at the upcoming FIFA Congress in May.

US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone expressed her excitement about hosting a World Cup tournament while emphasizing that it is crucial for her country’s growth globally. She highlighted that hosting such an event would provide a platform for women’s soccer to reach new heights and contribute positively to global sports development. She believes that meticulous preparation is key to ensuring success and making sure that players are given an equitable experience during their time at home soil.
