Laurie Sullivan, a science/STEM teacher at Barrett Elementary School in Arlington, is one of the finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award, considered the top honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers in the nation, recognizes educators who excel in teaching these subjects and have a significant impact on their students and schools.

Alongside Laurie Sullivan, educators from Goochland County and the city of Martinsville were also named as finalists in Virginia. These finalists were chosen by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education. Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons expressed pride in the selection of these three teachers from Virginia and is honored to have them represent the state in the national competition.

As part of the next step in the selection process, the national selection committee will now review the applications of these state finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The winners of this prestigious award will be announced by the White House.
