Joint bid by US and Mexico for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup withdrawn.

The US Soccer Federation and Mexican Football Federation have withdrawn their joint bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Instead, they plan to focus on a bid for the 2031 edition of the tournament with the goal of equal investment as the Men’s tournament.

This withdrawal leaves only two bids remaining for the 2027 tournament: one from Brazil and a joint bid from Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany. The winning bid will be announced at the 74th FIFA Congress in May.

Cindy Parlow Cone, president of US Soccer, stated that hosting a World Cup tournament is a significant undertaking, and having additional time to prepare will maximize its impact globally. The shift in bidding will enable a record-breaking Women’s World Cup in 2031 to help grow and raise the level of women’s soccer both domestically and internationally.

Despite this change in plans, there will still be a congested calendar of international soccer competition in the United States over the next few years. The FIFA Club World Cup will take place in 2025, followed by the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2026 (co-hosted by Mexico and Canada) and the summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

Mexican Football Federation president Ivar Sisniega expressed confidence that with their experience hosting men’s tournaments such as Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup, they would be able to provide excellent infrastructure and an enthusiastic fan base for the Women’s World Cup in 2031, contributing to continued growth of women’s football.
