The New York Yankees are preparing for the start of the 2024 season, facing off against the Houston Astros on Opening Day. However, due to injuries to key players such as Gerrit Cole, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza, the projected 26-man roster has undergone some changes.
Manager Aaron Boone will look to strengthen the bench depth by relying on the best players from spring training and a recent acquisition. In the starting lineup, Berti will replace LeMahieu at third base after being acquired from the Miami Marlins in a trade. The everyday starters remain largely intact.
On the bench, Wells will serve as the backup catcher behind Trevino, with Cabrera ready to play first base and also fill in as an outfielder if needed. With Rortvedt traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, Wells is now the lone backup catcher on the roster.
The rotation will see Gil taking Cole’s spot as the fifth starter, while Cortes will start on Opening Day alongside Rodon. The success of the rotation will determine Gil’s future on the team. Weaver will begin the season in the bullpen with Gil joining the starting rotation.
The Yankees hope that their reshaped roster will help them start off strong in 2024 and compete for another championship title.
