Elderly woman attempts to pay online scammer by robbing bank

Ann Mayers, a 74-year-old Ohio woman from Hamilton, shocked the community when she robbed a bank in Fairfield Township on April 19. Despite having no criminal history, Mayers entered the AurGroup Credit Union office and demanded money while showing her gun. She left with only $500 stolen, but the police quickly tracked her down at her home just a few kilometers away.

Upon being arrested, Mayers confessed to the robbery, admitting that she had fallen victim to online scams herself. Her family revealed that she had sent money to an unidentified person before the robbery, potentially making her a target for fraudsters. Despite being a victim, Mayers chose to solve her problem by committing a crime. Her family members were aware of her plan but did not take it seriously.

Mayers is currently held in Butler County Jail in Ohio and is seeking a pro bono lawyer due to financial constraints. It remains unclear how Mayers fell prey to the online scammer, but she had borrowed thousands of dollars from friends and family to pay them back. The police have not yet found evidence of the fraudulent activity. Mayers hopes that she will be assigned a lawyer who can help her navigate the legal system and clear her name.
