Aldi, a grocery giant with a goal of adding 800 new stores by the end of 2028, is set to open its first store in Allegheny Township at Hyde Park Plaza. The news was confirmed by Allegheny Township supervisor Jamie Morabito, who has been actively working to attract new businesses to the township since joining the board in January 2022. The store is expected to open in the last quarter of 2024 and will be part of Aldi’s expansion efforts.
The addition of larger anchors like Aldi is expected to help decline vacancy rates in Allegheny Township’s plazas, signaling a promising future for businesses in the area. With around a dozen new stores and restaurants already open, Morabito has been instrumental in bringing new businesses to the township. In order to secure Aldi’s interest in the area, Morabito spent considerable time providing the company with traffic and demographic data. Despite the relatively small population of 8,000 posing a challenge in discussions with Aldi and other businesses, Morabito was able to advocate for the township’s potential as a business-friendly location.
Hyde Park Plaza owner Jeff Paul has also been playing a key role in bringing new businesses to the area. Since acquiring the property in September 2022, Paul has welcomed Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Dollar Tree to his plaza, which already houses 16 storefronts and 564 parking spaces. Giant Eagle remains the only supermarket operating in Allegheny Township.
