Luke Willian from Australia secures gold medal

Australian triathlete Luke Willian won the elite men’s event at the World Triathlon Cup 2024 in Wollongong, Australia. He clinched the gold medal with an impressive overall time of 52 minutes and 51 seconds, beating South Africa’s Jamie Riddle and Diego Moya of Chile to second and third place, respectively.

In the women’s elite event, Australia’s Ellie Hoitnik finished in seventh place with a time of 1 hour and 52 seconds. Sweden’s Tilda Mansson won the event in 1 hour and 39 seconds. The Paris Olympics will see Australia field two men and two women in the individual and mixed relay triathlons, with hopes high for a strong showing from the Australian triathlon team.

Willian is determined to secure a spot in the upcoming Olympic Games after missing out on Tokyo 2020 due to injury. The absence of Matt Hauser, who is only confirmed for Paris 2024 Olympics triathlon team, provided Willian with an opportunity to shine on home soil. With this win, he has enhanced his chances for selection to compete in Paris but it’s not guaranteed yet.
