The passing of Cesar Luis Menotti, a legendary coach and former player, was announced by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Sunday. Menotti led Argentina to victory in the 1978 World Cup, making it a historic moment for the country.
Before turning to coaching, Menotti had a successful playing career with clubs such as Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, and Santos. He later transitioned to coaching and won the Argentine championship with Huracan in 1973. In 1974, he took over as the head coach of the Argentine national team and led them to victory in the World Cup.
Following his success with the national team, Menotti had numerous coaching stints with various clubs around the world. One of his most notable achievements came when he coached Barcelona to win the Copa Del Rey in 1983. He also coached Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Independiente, River Plate, Penarol, Rosario Central, Sampdoria, and Mexican sides Puebla and Tecos.
The AFA expressed their sadness at Menotti’s passing but acknowledged his immense contributions to Argentine football as both a player and a coach. His legacy will be remembered fondly by fans and players alike as they bid farewell to “Flaco querido.”
