Julius Whittier, a former University of Texas football player and the first Black letterman at the school, was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024. The induction ceremony took place at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio.
Whittier played for the Longhorns from 1987-91 and is already a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor. During his time at UT, he excelled on both offense and defense, earning multiple All-Big 12 honors and being named to several All-American teams. Whittier currently serves as a senior adviser for student affairs at UT Austin.
Anjanette Kirkland, a former track & field athlete from Holmes High School in San Antonio, also received recognition during the ceremony as she was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Kirkland competed for Texas A&M from 1993-97 and has already been inducted into several other halls of fame, including the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame, and the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame. During her time at A&M, Kirkland excelled as a hurdler, winning multiple conference titles and earning All-America honors. She currently serves as head track coach at Cypress Woods High School in Houston.
Andrea Williams, who attended Churchill High School in San Antonio, was also recognized during the ceremony for her outstanding athletic career with Texas A&M from 1992-1995. Williams was the first Aggie to letter in both volleyball and basketball in the same year and helped lead both teams to NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. She has since had a successful career in athletics administration and currently serves as Chief Experience Officer for NBA’s Utah Jazz.
