The country of Haiti is facing a crisis and political transitional solution is being developed to address it. On March 11th, the Caribbean Community Caricom in Jamaica agreed upon the creation of a Transitional Council to resolve the crisis and security issues in Haiti. The council members were sworn in on March 24th, with Edgard Leblanc Fils being elected as its chairman by the seven voting members.
The Transitional Council’s tasks include appointing a new interim government and preparing for Haiti’s first elections since 2016. The goal is to have a new president by February 7, 2026, and to coordinate the deployment of a multinational force to assist the Haitian police against armed groups that controlled over 80% of Port-au-Prince before the latest escalation. This led to widespread displacement and worsening hunger crisis, with scheduled flights canceled and foreign diplomats and citizens evacuated from Haiti.
There were allegations that Fritz Bélizaire’s election as interim prime minister was not carried out according to the rules. However, he was still elected along with Edgard Leblanc Fils as chairman of the Transitional Council.
