The rapid increase in geographical indication registrations in Vietnam has resulted in dozens of agricultural products being successfully protected abroad, leading to price increases of 15-25%. For instance, the Vu Van Men family’s lychees in Bac Giang are now protected under geographical indication in the Japanese market, which has led to a significant increase in their selling price.
To qualify for geographical indication protection in Japan, Luc Ngan lychees must adhere to strict technical requirements from seedlings to harvesting and preservation. The Bac Giang Department of Industry and Trade estimates that exports of lychees to Japan will increase from 201 tons in 2021 to 500 tons by 2024.
The National Office of Intellectual Property has seen a rapid rise in geographical indication registrations in Vietnam as part of its focus on protecting specific products through the development of geographical indications. However, registering trademarks and geographical indications can be a complex and time-consuming process for Vietnamese businesses expanding abroad.
To support businesses through this process, Vietnam has signed international treaties on intellectual property and cooperation projects with partners. Additionally, state management agencies provide seminars, training, and awareness-raising activities to build export strategies and develop product brands abroad.
Protecting intellectual property rights is not only important for businesses but also for localities and industry associations in Vietnam. Representative agencies abroad play a crucial role in providing timely information on market risks, policy changes, and intellectual property laws in foreign countries. This ensures that Vietnamese businesses are well-equipped to protect their interests abroad.
