The first day of our mission on Mars is focused on scientific research. ChemCam is currently conducting LIBS mosaics of several small, tilted blocks in the area, including “May Lake” and “Pavilion Dome.” Additionally, ChemCam is capturing a 3×3 RMI mosaic of a cluster of dark pyramidal blocks in the distance. Mastcam is also capturing large mosaics of two targets on Pinnacle Ridge and “Sharktooth Peak,” which we will explore further in the future.
After taking a break, Curiosity will perform contact science on the Bilko Pinnacle target. This task poses a challenge due to the block’s height and steep sides, as well as its rough surface with bumps and pits. MAHLI images are being taken from three different orientations to create detailed 3D images, as well as a 5cm stereo pair and a 2cm close approach.
Another contact science target, “Pipsqueak Spire,” a small light-toned rock, is also being examined with a 20cm and 5cm stereo pair. Due to its proximity to the rover, it was not possible to achieve a normal 25cm standoff distance. Nighttime APXS observations are planned for both targets before the arm is stowed away.
Once all contact science activities have been completed, CheMin will conduct an internal calibration standard analysis. This analysis aims to track performance and ensure accurate data collection for future scientific research on Mars.
