Taylor Pendrith secured his first PGA Tour title at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas. On the final hole, he took advantage of Ben Kohles’ mistakes to secure the victory. After overtaking Pendrith with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, Kohles bogeyed the 18th after hitting his second shot into the rough. Pendrith capitalized on this opportunity, two-putting for birdie on the 18th to secure the win with a score of 4-under 67 and a total score of 23-under 261.
Kohles finished just a stroke behind Pendrith with a final round of 66. He missed a crucial putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff. Alex Noren, who was also seeking his first PGA Tour victory, finished in third place with a score of 21 under. Noren impressed the crowd with a tee shot to just over two feet on the par-3 17th hole.
Other players at the top of the leaderboard included Aaron Rai, Matt Wallace, S.H. Kim, and Byeong Hun An, all finishing at least as well as or better than Noren. However, it was Pendrith and Kohles who were locked in a tight battle throughout most of the day, with each player taking turns leading. Jake Knapp, who had led after two rounds but struggled in his final round, finished at just over even par with a score of 70.
Pendrith’s victory was significant for him personally because it came in his 74th start on tour – not bad considering that many players take years to win their first title! It was also exciting for fans because it came down to such a close finish and required so much skill and strategy from both players involved.
