Mars Strikes Back: Sol 1979

The Curiosity team has shifted their focus from their original target, “Lake Orcadie”, to a new location, “Lake Orcadie2”, 7 inches to the right. This change was prompted by the difficulty in reaching the desired depth with the drill due to Mars’ stubborn bedrock.

The team of scientists and engineers is now working diligently to characterize this new location using various instruments such as APXS and MAHLI, as well as the dirt removal tool. In addition, they plan to study the wall and tailings from the first drill hole using ChemCam LIBS raster and Mastcam imaging.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the Curiosity team remains committed to successfully collecting a rock sample from Mars. They are determined to persevere and continue their mission to explore and learn more about the red planet.
