UNM Newsroom: College of Education & Human Sciences receives praise in latest state-sponsored evaluation

New Mexico’s College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) recently welcomed two Teacher Preparation Inspection evaluators (TPI-US) as part of the state’s literacy pilot program. The goal was to enhance literacy outcomes for New Mexican students by assessing how well the college prepares its graduates to support students in mastering literacy.

The inspectors evaluated the COEHS across three domains: teaching the science of reading, students’ literacy instruction in field sites, and partnerships within the community and school districts. The report recognized the COEHS as a leader in teaching the science of reading to teacher candidates, commending their unique commitment that exceeded standards seen elsewhere in the country.

Preliminary findings highlighted the strength of the COEHS teacher preparation programs, commending evidence-based coursework, field experiences, and partnerships with schools that facilitate the enactment of literacy science in New Mexico classrooms. The initial assessment recognized the college’s significant impact on promoting literacy in public schools and reservations.

On April 26, feedback from TPI inspectors lauded COEHS for its profound institution and program, emphasizing its significant influence on schools. A second site visit is scheduled for the upcoming academic year, with a formal evaluation expected in the months ahead. The visit aimed to provide an independent assessment of the college’s commitment to evidence-based practices and structured literacy, a goal that aligns with efforts to improve literacy outcomes for New Mexican students.
